Extract for employment within the education system

Those offered a job, assignment or student-teacher internship in a school or otherwise within the educational system are required to present an extract from the criminal record and the criminal suspects register.

Changes to the extract for work in schools from 15 July 2026

From 15 July 2026, the extract for work in schools will be expanded to include more types of crime. It will also include an extract from the criminal suspects register for suspicions that have led to prosecution for the same types of crime. The validity period will be changed from 1 year to 6 months. The extract will be renamed the register extract for work within the educational system, as work in, for example, Municipal adult education will also be covered by the register check.

EU citizens

When citizens of another EU country or the United Kingdom apply for an extract from the register, the request is automatically forwarded to the country in question in accordance with Article 22c. "If an individual requesting information about himself or herself in the criminal records register under Section 9 of the Criminal Records Act (1998:620) is a citizen of another Member State of the European Union, the Police Authority shall also obtain information about him or her from the criminal records of that State." Regulation (1999:1134) in Swedish on the Riksdagen website.

That country has 4 to 21 working days (not counting the respective country's public holidays) to respond to the request, which can result in a process that takes several weeks. We have no influence on the country's processing time, but you can facilitate the process yourself and thus obtain the extract more quickly by providing all information requested on the form.

The following applies for the extract

You are required to present a criminal records registry extract only when you are offered an employment, a student teacher internship, or an assignment in a school, a preschool, or childcare. Never submit the criminal records extract together with your application for employment.

  • The extract is valid for six months.
  • You may retain the original. The employer may only document that the extract has been presented. No further documentation of the record check may be made.
  • You may show the extract to more than one employer.

If you are going to do internship in a school and are employed by an employment agency, it is the school that has the right to request the extract, not the employment agency.

A check of the criminal record is designed to strengthen the protection of children and adolescents against sexual offences and other serious criminal offences. However, this is only part of the basis for assessing whether a person is suitable for work in schools and preschools. The fact that a person has been convicted of a crime does not mean that he or she cannot be employed.
