Personal safety

As a visitor, you can increase your security yourself by following some simple advice.

Valuables

Keep all valuables such as phones and wallets safe. Do not carry them in your back pocket or in open bags. Keep your bags closed and carry them across your body if possible.

Watch out for pickpockets

If you need to withdraw money from an ATM, do not withdraw more money than you need. Be careful that no one sees your PIN when you make your withdrawal.

If you're traveling in a group, keep an eye on each other so that you don't run into pickpockets, for example. Decide on meeting places throughout the day in case you happen to lose sight of each other.

Make sure your phone is fully charged so you can always use it if needed.

Be careful with your alcohol consumption

Drunk people are easy prey for fraudsters and pickpockets. Keep an eye on your glass if you're in the pub and don't leave it unattended.

Be observant of your surroundings and try to stick to open, well-lit areas.

If you see someone who needs help

Ask for help from staff, security guards or the Police. Always consider your own safety before taking action.

Rumours and misinformation

At large events, there is always a risk of rumours and misinformation being spread and this often happens on social media. Be critical of sources and do not spread unconfirmed information. Instead, seek confirmed information from the authorities.

Several applications to hold demonstrations and manifestations during the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö have been submitted to the Police. Most of them relate to the war between Israel and Hamas.

The Swedish Constitution safeguards the right to the freedom of expression, the freedom of assembly and the freedom of demonstration.

All individuals in Sweden have fundamental freedoms and rights, including the freedom of expression, the freedom of assembly and the freedom of demonstration. This means, among other things, that all individuals are allowed to express their opinions and take part in demonstrations.

The Police is tasked with making sure that the right to express one’s opinion is safeguarded in accordance with current legislation, and that authorised demonstrations and manifestations are being given the practical conditions necessary. Should crimes be committed in connection with the events, the Police will investigate these crimes.

As of autumn 2023, bags are banned from all major events in Sweden. Therefore, do not bring any bags if visiting any of the public events during the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö.

Bag ban at major events

Sweden is a target of information influence activities such as the spreading of false rumours and fake news.

For that reason, watch out for the spreading of rumours and propaganda that might surface in connection with the Eurovision Song Contest. Be especially aware of information that you find upsetting, frightening and that stirs up strong emotions. 

Do not spread disinformation or rumours

Avoid becoming a part of the spreading of rumours and think twice before sharing information on social media.

Questions that are good to ask yourself when receiving information:

• Is the information, the image or the video accurate? Is it fake, or is it reasonable?

• Can I double-check it against other sources? 

• Where does the information come from? Is this normally a credible source? 
• How old is the information, the image or the video? Is it new or is it being reused? 
• Why is this information being sent out? Who would benefit from spreading it?  Does somebody want you to react to it in a particular way?

Listen to the information provided by the authorities, keep up to date. Use sources that you assess to be reliable.

Travel to and stay in Sweden

In Sweden, making assessments of the terrorist threat level falls within the remit of the Swedish Security Service. In August 2023, the terrorist threat level was raised to High (4) on a five-level scale. The Swedish Security Service makes regular assessments as to whether a threat is currently posed to Sweden, and these assessments are shared with the Service’s partners, including the Police. Should any information emerge indicating the possibility of a concrete threat, the necessary measures will be taken.   

Below, you find the advice given by the Police on how to act in case of a terrorist attack. 

Flee

• Leave the location and find a place that is safe
• Take note of emergency exits 

Take cover

• Find a safe place
• Pay attention to what is happening
• Silence you phone
• Do not make unnecessary phone calls to people who may be in the danger zone 

Call the emergency services

• Dial 112 as soon as possible
• Provide information on the location, what has occurred and the perpetrators. 

Refrain from using the mobile phone network

• In case of a terrorist attack, it is important that the mobile phone network is not used unnecessarily as the emergency service personnel need to use the same network in their communications. After having dialled 112, refrain from using your mobile phone.
