Permanent import of firearms

If you plan to import firearms permanently into Sweden for private use, such as for hunting or target-shooting purposes, you must apply for a permit (license) to possess firearms in Sweden.

If you purchase the weapon from an EU country, the transaction must be approved in the country where you purchase the weapon. A Swedish approval of the transfer must be attached to this. The application for a licence and approval should be made well in advance of entry into Sweden.

If you import weapons into Sweden from a state outside the EU, you must check which documents the country of dispatch may require, such as approval of transfer of firearms from Sweden. You are also required to label the weapon within one month of the date of entry. The label must indicate that the weapon has been imported into Sweden and the year of entry.

The Swedish Customs Service checks weapons and parts of weapons brought into or out of Sweden. For more information on customs declarations, please visit www.tullverket.se

If you want to export a firearm registered in Sweden to another EU country, you must apply for a permit for the transfer. The application should be made well in advance of the transfer.

The consignee must be able to prove his/her right to possess the weapon(s) in the country to which the transfer is made. This is done by approval from the authority of the recipient country to the Police.
